NC ClayWorks Pottery Guild was started in the 1970’s by three women who scheduled get-togethers to discuss issues that were important to them as potters and to support each other as wives and mothers trying to develop a career in clay. Today NC ClayWorks has a membership of over 70 men and women from the Triangle area in North Carolina who represent varied interests and aspects of clay. Our members include nationally known potters, teachers, students, professionals and beginners in functional, non-functional, sculptural and architectural ceramics.
Our guild meets on the second Wednesday of every month (except July and August). Our meeting format and location varies from month to month. Guest speakers give lectures, demonstrations and slide shows, hands-on events allow members to try new techniques and learn new skills and group discussions and friendly critiques allow for encouragement and feedback between members. The meetings cover many subjects including business aspects of clay (i.e. how to approach a gallery), personal aspects (how-how to be more creative) and technical aspects (i.e.- making your own ceramic tools). Members are also encouraged to share their expertise and experience with each other.
NC ClayWorks provides members with current information of local art and ceramic events, net-working opportunities and several sales events throughout the year. Sales events are an important aspect of NC ClayWorks. They give members, regardless of skill level, the experience of presenting their work to the public and of planning and organizing a show or sale. Personal costs are kept as low as possible as NC ClayWorks dues help to subsidize the costs involved in hosting a sale.
Sales events are also viewed by NC ClayWorks as opportunities to educate the public about the art and craft of ceramics. More experienced members have a chance to teach the public what goes into making functional pottery, sculptural art, installing architectural ceramic work or working with ceramics and mixed media. By teaching the public as much as we can about areas such as forming techniques, glaze safety or other aspects of pottery, we create educated buyers and stimulate more interest in our art.
Mission Statement
To encourage, educate and provide opportunities for all NC ClayWorks members, regardless of skill level, in technical and promotional aspects of ceramics during monthly meetings and organized events and to promote ceramics by sharing our knowledge and love of clay with the public in order to create educated buyers and to stimulate interest in all disciplines of ceramic art.
