My mud journey...
I have been involved with art in one medium or another all my life.
I discovered throwing on a kick wheel in high school.
Later I found that for a small fee, you could go into the basement of an old house,
being used by the town's art council, and using the free mud piled in a large trash bin,
you could throw until your energy gave out.
Many hours were spent in that basement.
Then my life was fillled with children's footprints made into reindeer
and molding play dough into tea time cups.
Now that time has passed and my children no longer need my help with their art work,
I found my mud time again at the Durham Arts Council.
I love to throw but I also enjoy hand-building.
I have yet to reach my peak and I love to learn new ways to create.
I was loaned an old wheel which sits between our two vehicles in the garage.
My favorite times to throw are around 10:00pm when the world quiets down and it is just me,
the mud and the hum of the wheel.
You never know how your pottery is going to turn out until the kiln gives you its' gift.
The hardest part is not to fall in love with a piece until then.
I often do one-of-a-kind pieces as I search for the right look.
My trade name is Simply Mud in an effort to remind myself of this
when a piece ends up a mushy mess on the wheel looking like a creature from the black lagoon.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I do and come see me again as I grow in my mud time,
you can never be sure what you will find.
