Functional tableware is the main focus of my work. I
hope that people will handle the pieces often and enjoy
them for everyday use. All work is lead free and food safe.
Most pieces begin on the potter's wheel. The surface
texture is then achieved with various carving tools before
the bisque firing. Once the glaze is applied and decoration
is complete, the ware is fired a second time in either an
electric kiln or a gas kiln. Electric firings offer bright,
vibrant colors and gas firings give a softer, more natural
appearance to my glazes.
Porcelain is my first choice for clay. It has a silky touch
while being worked and can be finished to the softest,
smoothest surface. The whiteness of the clay body allows
the glaze colors to shine. At the highest fire, porcelain
makes the strongest clayware.
Stoneware clay is also used in my work. It has rich clay
color by itself and facilitates visual texture in the glazes.
My work is influenced by many factors includnig
patterns in nature, human movement and especially living
in a state so rich in pottery history. I plan to continue to
refine my techniques and experiment with new ideas, in
hopes that my work will continue to evolve through clay's
infinite potential.
